Humanities – an integrated approach

At Marysville we offer a cross curricular thematic approach that crosses all domains of the curriculum and is explicitly taught and connected together. This approach seeks to put the teaching of cognitive skills in the context of a real-world subject that is both specific enough to be practical, and broad enough to allow creative exploration. We encourage students to ask questions, explore and investigate

Through the establishment of an integrated thematic approach to  learning, our students are encouraged to:

  • ask questions, building on prior knowledge and making their own discoveries.
  • make connections between ideas, learning domains and experiences.
  • develop group building skills as the explore ideas together.
  • manage their own time and tools.
  • research their wonderings about topics that are of interest to them.
  • be critical thinkers in determining the relevance and clarity of information they hear and read.
  • communicate their findings through a developing repertoire of styles.

Through the use of an integrated approach, students are preparing the skills they will need to be curious and lifelong learners.

ICT

Marysville Primary places great emphasis on the use of Information Technologies to support the curriculum. We run a successful 1:1 program providing all students in Prep – 1 with their own iPad. Students in grades 2 – 6 have their own laptop computer. The devices are kept at school and sent home on weekends for the students to use. Whiteboards and projectors are installed in each classroom. These allow the teachers to teach specific skills and give software demonstrations. Students use a range of educational apps and display their work for the class.

Our major focus is on:

  • using technology as part of everyday school life to support authentic learning tasks
  • the use of Microsoft 365
  • using educational programs to support literacy and numeracy
  • internet use – research based
  • file management
  • typing skills

Cyber Safety

The students at Marysville have access to a wide variety of digital technologies. To ensure that these forms of learning are used well, we teach students cyber safety skills using a variety of interactive programs which are tailored to age-appropriate levels.
